Breaking Down Taylor Swift and The Tortured Poets Department (plus: Cindy Lee's Diamond Jubilee!)
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.3 месяца назад
For this week's reviews we're setting our sights on two of the biggest double albums of recent memory, Cindy Lee's titanic and masterful Diamond Jubilee (Ryley's album of the year so far), and of course, Taylor Swift's divisive, maligned, but meticulous The Tortured Poets Department, which may be her most insular record yet. There's a lot to unpack with both, especially the latter, so we hope y...

Great Albums With Bad Cover Art
Просмотров 1895 месяцев назад
This week we're joined by August to discuss 20 great albums we love with covers we wish the bands had reconsidered. But what makes an album cover 'bad'? Is it just a matter of what's aesthetically pleasing or is it about what fits the music best? Each of us have five picks, and we don't always agree with each other, but our selections cover a wide range of ways that album art can miss the mark....

There a lot of similarities between this film and Road to Perdition. Both dark, figurative and literal films with amazing cinematography. Both have amazing scores. None of the main characters are good guys or bad guys. You have two beloved actors with Hanks and Pitt both playing characters way outside of their normal roles. I feel they are both performances are underrated and under appreciated. Both death scenes are eerily similar.

I can't relate to your ranking of Steely Dan's albums. Maybe it's me not you? Nah! I think context, in terms of exposure to the music, is key for my preference. I discovered Steely Dan when I purchased an 8 track version of Can't Buy A Thrill (CBAT), and it served as the foundation for evaluating subsequent albums. I began listening to CBAT in my car, and it went round and round for weeks, searing the songs into my brain. In my opinion, the one thing CBAT has that the subsequent productions lack is a groove. The songs fit together and complement each other. As you mention, the other albums have high points, but I always find myself skipping through to get to the meat. So for me, CBAT is ranked at the top, and I liken it to the stellar debut album of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, with subsequent albums falling short on impact. Same with Steely Dan. One critique that I have of your review, is that compared to similar RUclips rankings of Steely Dan, I found yours to be most confusing. I must admit that seeing CBAT ranked so low made me question the rest of your review (not even in the top 4?). One thing that really confused me was the word salads/adjectives used to describe the songs. Suggest distilling your takes on songs, as I was frequently left questioning what you actually meant (less if better). But I salute your appreciation for Steely Dan, as their music is a remarkable achievement that future generations will undoubtedly also appreciate.

Just my interpretation here. Brandon and I are from the same area. Drunk driving culture is pretty normalized here, and basically just accepted even though it has terrible consequences. Skin meadow, and Daytona 500 elucidate on this very well. In fact think of 'Skin Meadow' as a mondegreen for 'skin, metal' like a fusion of our flesh to the guard rails and other vehicles on impact. If you listen close when Brandon starts his vocal part on Skin meadow, he's saying 'skin, metal.' I also think it's a lot about normalized tragedy and our strange tolerance to terrible events that are treated like currency in our outrage culture we have in the west. It's like an illustration on just how insane modernity is and how it's affecting our species. It feels hopeless. Also, I believe we are all 'The Whaler' society at large. Taking something organic and resourceful and taking until there's nothing left over to get anymore. It's the mission of modernity.
